When did it get to be May? It’s hard to believe how fast the year has gone… we’re 1/3 through the year already! Through April, I’ve been trying to be more mindful of recurring morning routines that usually make or break my day. One thing I’ve decided to do in May is try to shift my mindset and habits.

Have you ever noticed that if you wake way too early in the morning and you try to get to sleep but you end up tossing and turning, and by the time you actually get up, you’re more tired than when you initially woke up?

So this is my plan: instead of tossing and turning to try to grab another hour or so of sleep, I’m just going to get up. Yes, I’ll probably still be tired – but probably no more tired than trying and failing to get more sleep and chances are, I’ll be in a better mood than focusing on a shitty sleep. My sleep might have been deep and undisturbed for 6 hours… but if those last 2 hours were shit, then I perceive that my whole sleep was shit. And I’m miserable and grumpy and chances are, I’ll binge eat – this has been the recurrence for as long as I can remember.

So, what am I going to do instead? Let me see…

I have found that how I wake up sets the mood to my day. If I wake up late, then I feel rushed and out of sorts. If I get woken early, I’m tired and grumpy. Both of these often lead to binging on unhealthy food. On the flip side, if I get a good sleep and wake feeling rested, my day goes really well and any “pit-falls” that happen during the day are handled in stride.

We have direct control over our day – we choose how it’ll go – and this is usually decided before you even get out of bed. Changing your routine and habits are a great way to encourage having a good day.

Did you notice that word? “Encourage”? Let’s face it – some days are simply the shits! These days will happen, but it’s important to recognize them for what they are; a bad day, not a bad life. It’s SO easy to get weighed down with “woe is me” pity party. As much as I would love to tell you to “get over it”, I know from personal experience, that’s easier said than done. Some days, try as you might, you may just be unable to do it! And that’s okay! It’s okay to have a bad day! Just see it as it is; a bad DAY.

One thing I have been trying to do, is to start and end my day in gratitude. As I’m trying to fall sleep, I’ll try to go through the alphabet and come up with things I have gratitude/grateful for:

I’m grateful for my positive Attitude.

I’m grateful for my Body; it may not be where I want, but it’s pretty amazing for what it can do.

I’m grateful for my Cats; I sometimes want to kill them, but they bring me lots of joy….

It’s hard, but it can be done. I think I’ve only been able to get up to ‘F’ before falling asleep.

In the morning, I’m trying to develop an Ayurvedic morning routine – when I’m able to do it, my day always goes well… though I haven’t been able to get the neti pot in there as it requires more prepping, so I’m coming up with other options to reduce the prep work so I can include it in the mornings. However, when I’m doing the self-massage after my dry brushing and shower, I give my gratitude for the body part I’m moisturizing:

I’m grateful for my arms as I can hug my husband and hold my kitties.

I’m grateful for my legs as they keep me active and take me places….

You get the idea.

My morning time is sacred… so I shouldn’t let an early morning/shitty sleep ruin it. I hope with this realization and plan to turn a shitty morning into a productive one.
